The tour begins at the entrance to Sweden’s most important Cathedral, for a short rumination on pre- and early modern ideas about science, nature and the human body. Across the street we will next pay a visit to Museum Gustavianum, where we will examine the Augsburg art-nature cabinet (1632), designed to gather the wonders of the world in one piece of furniture, as well as the seventeenth-century anatomical theatre, used for public dissections of human corpses. As the Museum building was used for the largest race-biological exhibition in Swedish history, and is situated next to the building that once housed the State Institute for Racial Biology (1922–1950), we will make a short stop in front of that building to reflect upon the academic legacy of scientific racism, and the complex relationships between nature and culture, science and politics.
