Have you ever thought of taking the train (or bus) instead of flying to Uppsala?
Why?
Plane travel is up to 70 times more damaging for the climate than going by train – probably we all know this. A conference on “Climate histories” should not end up in aggravating the climate crisis.
Can I afford This?
We are confident you can! Yes, travelling by train tends to be more time-consuming, and it can often be more expensive than plane travel. However, if you book your train tickets well in advance, they tend to be quite affordable. And you can also transform your train seat into a rolling office and use the ride for work. And we argue that train travel is much more fun than air travel – all the more so if is done together. Compared to what is at stake, both the time and the money are well spent for this little adventure.
What Else Can I Do?
We kindly ask you to share with us (and everybody) directly on this platform or via email:
- Your advice for good and affordable train (and/or bus) connections to Uppsala from various places in Europe
- Initiatives for group travel by train to Uppsala from various places in Europe – talk to your colleagues
- Any challenges you encounter in the process of going by train to Uppsala (regarding e.g. the administrative process within your academic institution; booking the tickets; or during the train ride.)
Finally, come to our Different World Session at the conference, where we will discuss more widely the issue how to organize academic events in a climate-friendly manner and the needed changes in our academic culture this entails – and where your experiences will be very valuable.
